If your new to the world of wine this quick guide will give you the basics to get you on your way…
Colour
Red wine gets its colour from the skins of the red grapes used to make it.
With white wine, white grapes are used or the the skins are peeled so they don't give the wine that red colour.
Rosé, is not a mix of the two like some believe, but is just tinted by the skins of red grapes and they are removed during the wine making process.
All wine tends to darken with age.
Choosing Your Wine
When choosing wine it just comes down to taste. Wine can range from light bodied through to full bodied, from sweet to dry and consist of a multitude of different flavours and tastes – Ultimately it’s just down to trial and error, and along the way your knowledge will expand.
Storing Your Wine
Keep your wine in a cool dark place and preferably away from strong smells. It is best to keep bottles on their side unless the bottle has a screw top or is sparkling, in which case upright is fine.
How to Serve Your Wine
Serve wine in tulip shaped glasses which are larger at the base. Fill the glass about a third of the way – this leaves room to swirl the wine which helps release flavours.
Red
Red wine should be opened an hour or so before you drink it. If possible, decanter your wine once opened in order to release its full potential; this allows the wine to ‘breathe’ and release its flavours.
Red wine should be served at room temperature.
White & Rosé
White and Rosé should be chilled and as a guide put the bottle in the fridge half an hour or so before drinking – the key is not to over cool it and drink it 'fresh'
