How do Gambero Rosso rate wine?
Each year, Gambero Rosso starts with more than 70,000 wines from all over Italy which are sampled by around 30 groups of wine tasters. Each group consists of five judges and in these initial stages the number is whittled down until approximately 20,000 remain.
The next stage sees the remaining wines being ‘blind’ tasted by a panel of over 100 wine experts. At this stage the wines are known only by number to achieve impartial evaluation. Over 10,000 bottles are rejected outright leaving the remaining bottles to be awarded using Gambero Rosso’s rating system.
Each bottle receives either one, two or three glasses - three being the highest accolade.
In 2006, the coveted three glass award; or ‘Tre Bicchieri’, went to no less than 246 wines.
